01 — The House

Grain & Gild is a joinery company in Dubai working on homes. We measure, draw, build and install fitted wardrobes, kitchen cabinetry, wall panelling, TV units and media walls, majlis joinery, wooden doors, bathroom vanities, wine cellars and custom made furniture, from our own Dubai workshop, for homeowners and for the interior designers and architects they work with.

Why homeowners and designers choose us

  • One workshop, one point of accountability.

We design, build and install with our own joiners, so nothing is sub-let and lost between trades.

  • Materials you can name.

Solid oak and walnut, book-matched veneers, brass and lacquered finishes, written on your quote before we cut.

  • Fixed timelines.

You get a build and install date in writing.

  • Tolerances that show.

Flush lines, aligned grain, doors that sit true.

What you are commissioning

Residential joinery is storage and furniture made for one room in one home, to those measurements and no others. We measure the room ourselves, draw it, name the timber, veneer, hardware and finish in writing, and fix the price before anything is cut.

That suits a bedroom wall where a standard carcass leaves a dead gap at the ceiling, a kitchen laid out around how you cook, a villa where wardrobes, doors and panelling read as one scheme. It does not suit a repair, a flat-pack assembly or a single shelf. A carpenter by the hour will serve you better and cost less.

Where you would rather hand over a whole room than manage trades around the joinery, we take that on too. A kitchen renovation or a bathroom renovation runs as one job: strip-out, the wet and first-fix trades, tiling and stone, worktops and appliances, and the joinery. Owning the workshop is why the room is worth handing over whole rather than split between a fitter and a supplier.

We work for homeowners directly, and for the designers and architects they hire. Grain & Gild designs, builds and installs from one Dubai workshop, so one team is accountable from measure to finish. Contractors and brands fitting out an office, shop or restaurant want commercial joinery and fit-out.

The rooms we work in

Bedrooms are the usual starting point: floor-to-ceiling custom wardrobes cut to your ceiling height, planned around what you hang and fold. In the kitchen we make the cabinetry, the island, the pantry joinery and the appliance housings; stone tops and appliances are coordinated with your suppliers or ours, and the rest is bespoke kitchen work.

Living rooms usually need two things together: a TV unit or media wall that hides the screen, the boxes and the cables, and wall panelling around it so the wall reads as one surface. Timber ceiling panels follow the same detail. In a villa the majlis is its own scope: seating bases, panelling, storage and display.

Then the parts people leave late. Wooden doors and frames, book-matched so the grain runs on down a hallway, not restarting at every leaf. Bathroom vanities built to the basin and the wall rather than trimmed to fit. A wine cellar or glazed display wall, racked to your bottle formats. And the piece that does not exist off the shelf, a dining table, a sideboard, a desk: custom made furniture.

What a home project asks of you

Our four steps are on the process page. What it does not say is what the job asks of you.

Early, decisions, while they are still cheap to change: layout, how a wardrobe divides inside, timber, finish, handles. They go into the drawings and the written material specification, and nothing is cut until you approve that set. Changes after cutting are usually possible, but they can move the price and the date, and we say which before we act.

In the middle, almost nothing: the build happens in the workshop, not in your home.

At the end, access, agreed with the household or the building. We protect floors and finished surfaces on arrival and clear up before leaving each day. Hinges, runners and alignment settle over the first weeks; adjustments in the first months are ours.

Choosing the timber and the finish

The palette is short on purpose: oak and walnut, solid or book-matched veneer, lacquer in matt or gloss, painted timber, natural oil, brass and steel, soft-close runners and hinges.

Solid feels and wears beautifully but moves more with humidity. Book-matched veneer over a stable engineered board gives the same face with less movement, and it is the only way to run continuous grain across a wall of doors.

Matching across rooms is the decision people leave too late. If the wardrobes, the kitchen and the panelling belong to one scheme, choose the timber, the veneer direction and the hardware once, at the start. Samples judge better in the hand than on a screen, so we arrange a workshop visit at quote stage.

A villa job and an apartment job are not the same work

The joinery can be identical. The project around it is not.

A villa is several rooms at once, and the work is coordination: wardrobes in every bedroom, a kitchen, a majlis, hallway panelling, specified together so timber, stain and hardware match across the house, and sequenced so we are not installing over another trade. In a gated community, passes and delivery timing are arranged with the community office.

An apartment is a smaller scope on a harder site: service lift, delivery window, protection over lobby and corridor finishes. Ceiling heights and wall build-ups differ between towers, so fixings are planned to suit the building rather than assumed, and any structural constraint is raised at the measure visit, not on install day.

07 — Questions

Questions clients ask

Do I need an interior designer before I contact you?
No. We draw the piece, specify the materials and quote a fixed price. If you have a designer or architect already, we build to their set.
Can you do the wardrobes, the kitchen and the panelling as one job?
Yes. A whole home can be planned as one package so timber, veneer direction and hardware match across the rooms.
Can you take on a whole kitchen or bathroom, not just the joinery?
Yes. Where you want the room handled as one job we take all of it: strip-out, the wet and first-fix trades, tiling and stone, worktops and appliances, and the joinery we build ourselves. It runs to one programme with one point of accountability at handover. If the room is already being run by someone else, we quote the joinery on its own instead.
How do I get a price, and can it change afterwards?
We measure, draw and quote a fixed price with the materials named. It changes only if you change the scope, and we tell you the effect first. We do not publish rate cards: scope, material and finish drive the cost.
Do you have a showroom?
No. Finished work is in the portfolio, and we arrange a workshop visit at quote stage so you can handle the samples in person.
Do you take on repairs, flat-pack assembly or a single shelf?
No. We make fitted joinery: measured, drawn, built in our workshop and installed. For a repair or an assembly job, a carpenter by the hour is the right call.
